About
12 Newmarket Trainers are taking part in the first ever Newmarket Trainers' Charity race at Newmarket Rowley Mile Racecourse on Saturday 20th September as part of the Henry Cecil Open Weekend.
The Open Weekend is when the headquarters of British horseracing in Newmarket opens to the public. The family friendly weekend offers a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes at some of the country’s best-known racing yards.
On Saturday, a number of sites across Newmarket are open to the public including Newmarket Equine Hospital (NEH), British Racing School, Injured Jockeys Fund Peter O’Sullevan House, Jockey Club Rooms, National Horseracing Museum, Godolphin Rehoming and The National Stud. Followed by racing at Newmarket Racecourse, where the charity race is taking place. The trainers will race over one mile at Newmarket's historic Rowley Mile racecourse, where they will each need to raise £1,000.
In 2024 the event raised £89,196 for its charity partners, The Newmarket Housing Trust and Racing Welfare. The same charities will be supported in 2025. The Newmarket Housing Trust, a project led by the Newmarket Trainers Group, will develop a portfolio of accommodation, such that it can meet the housing needs of racing staff in Newmarket aged 16-18 years old, 18 – early 20’s, couples and older people without children, and families.
